Verinag

Verinag is a famous tourist destination and it lies in Anantnag district in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is at a distance of 26 kilometers from Anantnag and around 78 kilometers from Srinagar. Verinag is the first tourist place in Kashmir when traveling by road from Jammu.

Verinag Spring is a famous tourist attraction. An octagonal-shaped stone basin lies at the origin of the Spring. Mughal emperor Jahangir constructed this basin. Later,  Shah Jahan constructed a beautiful garden next to the spring. Furthermore, This spring has never dried up or overflowed. Verinag Spring is the major source of water to the Jhelum river. Also, the Archaeological Survey of India recognizes Verinag as a monument of national importance. The water of Verinag spring looks greenish-blue and it is extremely pure. The color of the water adds to the beauty of the place. Also, many locals also visit the garden continuously.

The Verinag spring is named after the name of a nearby town called Shahabad. Shahabad was earlier called by the name of “Vér” and also “Nag” means a spring. From this, it came to be known as Vernág. It is also a sacred place for Hindus because shivling is in one of the arcs of the structure. The garden also has an old temple and some ancient idols of Hindu goddesses too.

Srinagar international airport is the nearest international airport and it is located at a distance of 85 km from Verinag. 

By Train

Jammu railway station and Udhampur railway station are the closest railheads to Verinag. Jammu railway station is located at a distance of 139 KM from Verinag 

By Road

Verinag lies at the entry point of Kashmir Valley right after crossing Jawahar Tunnel. Jawahar tunnel Gateway of Kashmir. State bus services and private buses ply continuously from Srinagar to Anantnag. Taxis are also available to reach Verinag. Furthermore, Verinag is at a distance of 86.1 km via NH 44 from Srinagar.
