Kargil is a town which is located in the Kargil district of the Ladakh region. It is located at a distance of 60 km from Drass and 204 km from Srinagar. However, from 234 km from Leh, 240 km from Padum, and 1,047 km from Delhi.

The famous ruler of Skardu Ali Sher Khan Anchan had a great influence on this area. This Baltistani prince conquered most of the provinces of Purig and introduced Balti culture in the Kargil. However, The Dogras unified Baltistan, Purig, Zanskar, and the current Leh district into a single administrative unit. The Dogra rule lasted till 1947 and a new line of control was created between India and Pakistan. This new line of control separated Skardu and Kargil.

Kargil was part of the wazarat (district) of Ladakh before the partition of India and Pakistan, a less populated region with diverse linguistic, ethnic, and religious groups. These groups lived in isolated valleys which are separated by some of the world’s highest mountains. The Ladakh province had three sub-districts, named after their headquarter cities which are Leh, Skardu, and Kargil. However, the district headquarters used to be replaced by each other.

Kargil is a major transport hub and the second largest urban center in Ladakh In addition, it is also a base for adventure activities. These adventures being mountaineering, high-altitude trekking, camping, river rafting, etc.

Kargil is located just 11 km from the Line of Actual Control and further, It holds strategic geographical importance for India. Kargil experienced Pakistan’s infiltration and war in 1999, afterward, Kargil also became a hot topic in Bollywood movies, such as

Kargil lies at an altitude of 2676 meters in the Suru Valley. In addition, it has been a prominent trading post as well as important stopover for caravan routes. Kargil is about 205 km far from Srinagar. Kashmir Valley lies to its south and Baltistan lies to its west.

Culture of Kargil

Many different communities live in Kargil such as Tibetan Muslims (Burig), ethnic groups from Baltistan (Balti), (Shina) who are Shia Muslims, and Yarkhand from China (Arghons). The town has various religious people such as Sunni Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists too.
